The Newton Project aims to publish a full online edition of all of Sir Isaac Newton’s (1642-1727) writings, both printed and manuscript. In addition to his scientific and mathematical works, the edition includes Newton's many alchemical and religious texts. Approximately 6.5 million words have already been transcribed, and the project is on-going.

The Newton Project aims to publish a full online edition of all of Sir Isaac Newton’s (1642-1727) writings, both printed and manuscript. In addition to his scientific and mathematical works, the edition includes Newton's many alchemical and religious texts. Approximately 6.5 million words have already been transcribed, and the project is on-going.
Strengths and weaknesses
The Newton Project presents the life and work of Isaac Newton in the round, and consequently is of great value not just for historians of science, but for those interested in religion, pseudo-science and the transmission of knowledge. While the transcribed texts are fully searchable, this is currently only via a custom Google search (a more advanced search facility is in development). New material is being added to the site all the time, but users should be aware that it is not complete.
Technical Methods
Transcriptions of the printed and manuscript works have been marked up using the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). The date and process of online publication ('revision history') is given at the top of each text, and the schema and XML coding are also visible. Where possible, documents have contextual material in the form of catalogue details, translations into English, and links to images of the original documents.
About the project
The project is currently based at the University of Sussex. From the start of 2008 it has been funded by two Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) research grants and two Jisc awards.
