By using this website, you signify that you have read and accept these Terms of use. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the website. We reserve the right, at our discretion, to change, modify, add to or remove any of these terms at any time. So please check these terms periodically for changes. Your continued use of the website following the posting of changes to these terms means that you accept these changes.

These Terms of use apply solely to the Connected Histories website. The Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London take no responsibility for the content, accuracy, or access arrangements of any other site, including those linked to via search results.

Licence

Unless otherwise stated, the copyright and other intellectual property rights in all material on this site, including photographs and graphical images, and the organisation and layout of the site are jointly owned or controlled by the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London.

You are permitted to access, print and download extracts from this site on the following conditions:

  • use of all material on this site is for non-commercial or your own personal use only; any copies of these pages saved to disk or to any other storage medium may only be used for subsequent viewing purposes or to print extracts for non-commercial or your own personal use
  • material on this site must not be modified in any way
  • graphics on this site must not be used separately from accompanying text, and
  • any use of the material for a permitted purpose must be accompanied by (i) a full source citation; (ii) the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London copyright notice.

Service access

While the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London shall use their reasonable endeavours to ensure that this site is normally available 24 hours a day, the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London will not be liable if for any reason the site is unavailable at any time or for any period.

Access to this site may be suspended temporarily and without notice in circumstances of system failure, maintenance or repair or for reasons beyond the control of the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London.

The Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London are not responsible for the availability of external sites accessed through Connected Histories.

Liability

While the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London shall use their reasonable endeavours to ensure that the information on this site is correct, the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London shall not be liable for any loss or damage (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business or loss of profits) arising in contract, tort or otherwise from the use of this site or from the inability to use this site, or from the use of any information contained in it, or from any action or decision taken as a result of using this site or any such information.

Connected Histories provides access, through its search engine, to a number of externally hosted resources. The Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London accept no responsibility for the availability or content of any site to which a hypertext link from this site exists and they make no warranty, express or implied, in respect of such sites. The links are provided on an 'as is' basis.

You may provide hyperlinks to the website and its pages without prior written consent from the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London. Such hyperlinks must display the relevant page in the same form as this website, without amendment or framing.

Individual registration

All information recorded and collected about your use of Connected Histories will be used by the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London in accordance with our Privacy policy.

On registration, you must provide us with accurate, complete information and it is your responsibility to update and maintain changes to that information by going to 'My account' or equivalent. Each registration is for a single user only.

On registration, you will choose a user name and password to which one or more OpenID identities may optionally be attached ("ID"). You must treat such information as confidential, and you must not disclose it to any third party. The Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London do not permit any other person sharing your ID or access through a single ID being made available to multiple users via a network or other organisation.

You are responsible for all use of the website made by you or anyone else using your ID and for preventing unauthorised use of your ID. We may cancel or suspend your access if you do this without further obligation to you. If, while using the website, you discover anyone in breach of the acceptable use policy you should inform us as soon as possible.

Connected Histories does not provide registration facilities for external sites such as those accessed through search results. Where subscription is required, users are responsible for obtaining access through individual or institutional subscription.

User-created content

Content created by registered users through the Workspace and Connections features will be regularly reviewed and the Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London reserve the right to publish, delete, edit or otherwise modify submitted material. Publication of any material remains at our sole discretion. The Universities of Sheffield, Hertfordshire and London do not accept liability in respect of any material submitted by users in this way and nor are we responsible for its content and accuracy. Material considered potentially libellous or defamatory, or potentially in breach of copyright, will be deleted. Any material considered to be of a commercial nature or spam will be deleted.

The Connected Histories project will endeavour to the best of its ability to preserve all the information you contribute, such as Connections, saved searches and results, but it cannot be held responsible for any accidental loss of data. Any information which is of vital importance to you should be backed up separately.

Contributors who violate these terms and conditions may be suspended or banned from posting without notice.

General

By accessing any part of this site, you shall be deemed to have accepted these terms in full.

These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English law and any dispute arising from them shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.

As a not-for-profit service, we welcome donations from our users.
